Paintings

These paintings begin with landscape, but they are not paintings of particular places. They grow out of observation, memory, invention, and the physical process of making. Gardens, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, trees, weather, and fragments of the natural world appear and disappear as the paintings develop.

I want the work to operate at several scales at once. From a distance, a painting can be experienced as a whole—as atmosphere, movement, structure, and presence. Up close, that whole begins to break apart into marks, textures, small images, fragments, and unexpected relationships: worlds collapsing into worlds.

I am interested in landscape as something continually becoming rather than something fixed. The paintings develop in much the same way. They accumulate, change direction, become disrupted, and reorganize themselves through the process of painting. I am less interested in describing a landscape than in creating a place the viewer can enter, wander through, question, and continually rediscover.
