In 2019, I was selected to deliver Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Douglas R. Moore Faculty Research Lecture. My presentation, “Magical Landscapes: A Discussion of the Creation of a Work of Art,” explored the history of landscape painting, contemporary influences on my work, and the process of creating a large-scale painting from beginning to end. The lecture reflects my long-standing interest in landscape not simply as subject matter, but as a place for invention, memory, disruption, and discovery. This is a video of me creating the painting for the lecture.
Mythical Landscapes of the Future — Full Interview, 2024
Created in conjunction with my exhibition Mythical Landscapes of the Future at the McLean County Arts Center in Bloomington, Illinois, this extended interview explores the ideas, influences, and working processes behind the exhibition. I discuss landscape as a place of memory, invention, and transformation, and the ways paintings develop through improvisation, disruption, and discovery rather than from a predetermined image.
Memory of Water
This video explores my Memory of Water series, which began during a 2012 residency at the Heliker-LaHotan Foundation on Great Cranberry Island, Maine. After weeks of working directly from the ocean outside my studio, I turned away from the view and began painting from memory. That shift became central to the series: landscape transformed through experience, memory, imagination, and time.
Taking Risks in Art and Life — TEDxMNSU
In this TEDx talk, I discuss the role of risk in art and in life: how uncertainty, failure, experimentation, and the willingness to move beyond what is familiar can open unexpected possibilities. Drawing on my own development as an artist, I consider risk not as recklessness, but as an essential part of the creative process and of continuing to grow.
