Introducing the Wandering Studio
On the Road — Travels in Our Airstream
Travel has always been an important part of my life as an artist. There's something wonderful about leaving the familiar behind, following a road into an unknown landscape, and discovering what might be waiting around the next bend.
Our Airstream has become a kind of traveling extension of Poor Farm Studios. It allows Wilbur and me to spend time in places rather than simply pass through them. We can linger beside a lake, wander through a desert, follow a river, or sit quietly and watch the light change.
I draw, photograph, and collect impressions along the way. Sometimes these experiences find their way directly into paintings. Other times they become part of a larger accumulation of memories, observations, and sensations that inform my work in ways I may not immediately recognize.
I'm increasingly interested in the idea that a landscape is never fixed. Weather, light, history, memory, and our own presence are constantly changing our experience of a place.
This page is a record of our wanderings—part travel journal, part artist's notebook, and part celebration of the simple pleasure of being out in the world.
After all, the journey is as much a part of the work as the destination.
