Old Roses begins with the familiar structure of flowers in a vase, but the image quickly becomes something less literal. Loose stems and fading blossoms drift through veils of pale color, interrupted by flashes of pink, red, yellow, and green. The flowers seem to hover between presence and disappearance.
Rather than describing a bouquet precisely, the painting is about the memory and sensation of flowers—their fragility, awkwardness, beauty, and inevitable change. Areas of open canvas and transparent color allow the image to breathe, while small marks and fragments reward close looking.
