Art and Travel

To travel is, in many ways, to shed the skin of habit and expectation. To travel is to reinvent the self. For an artist that is also a reinvention and renewal of their art.

Some of my most cherished journeys have been shared. Alongside my friend, the poet Richard Robbins, I have co-led travel experiences to South America and Scotland. These adventures incorporate poetry and painting to teach our fellow travelers to savor the journey through the creative process.

I also camp with my partner in life, Wilbur. We love to pack up our fabulous Airstream trailer and head out onto the open road, exploring our wonderful State and National parks. A favorite destination is the wonderful town of Grand Marais, in Northern Minnesota.

While I travel I create artwork. I find great inspiration in the commonplace of a new place. The work you see on this page is some of the work I have produced on our travels. I never look to the “grand view” or the “perfect scene”, rather I seek beauty at the base of an old tree, a bit of grass by a rock or the edge of a pond.

Enjoy the trip!
